20080526 G8 ministers urge actions for biodiversity

Recognizing the fundamental importance of biodiversity for human livelihoods, the eradication of poverty and achievement of the Millennium Development Goals, the ministers said that biological diversity constitutes the indispensable foundation of lives and of global economic development. The proposal, titled " Kobe Call for Action for Biodiversity", highlighted the advancement of sustainable forest management, including the conservation of forest biodiversity, by improving forest governance and by addressing illegal logging and related trade collectively and individually, as stated in the G8 Forest Experts Report on Illegal Logging and reduce emissions from deforestation and forest degradation in developing countries (RECC) . Biodiversity, along with climate change and the 3Rs was one of the three major themes discussed at the three-day ministerial meeting.

20080526 Joint efforts urged to slash use of plastic shopping bags

clipped from www.chinadaily.com.cn At a G8 environment session on 3Rs (Reduce, Reuse and Recycle), Japanese Environment Minister Ichiro Kamoshita said that as the use of plastic shopping bags indicates heavy consumption of resources as well as dumping of a great deal of waste to the environment, it is of special importance to make joint efforts in this respect. Japan, China and South Korea should thus made concerted efforts to urge the G8 members, Asian nations and the rest of the world at large to give priority to curbing the production of waste, and to cut down on the production and use of plastic shopping bags in particular. Three major issues of biodiversity, climate change and 3Rs are on the agenda of the three-day conference. The Group of Eight is composed of the United States, Japan, Germany, France, Britain, Italy, Canada, and Russia, the eight leading industrial nations, whose heads of government hold regular meetings known as the G8 summit.

[China Daily] In addition to its massive physical destruction, the devastating May 12 earthquake will deliver multiple aftershocks to the economy of the worst affected region, Sichuan province. The impact will differ in various areas and the total loss will exceed the January blizzards, which cost the economy 151.7 billion yuan. The quake has seriously affected agricultural production in Sichuan and other regions, says Wei Chao'an, agriculture vice-minister. The earthquake, which triggered landslides in the mountainous province, has damaged 33,333 hectares of farmland, including more than 10,000 hectares of wheat and rapeseed and more than 20,000 hectares of vegetable plantations, in the 13 worst-hit cities and counties of Sichuan province, Wei says.

Quake lakes were formed after landslides blocked rivers. Chen hoped the weather will allow the helicopter to deliver more big machinery to dig channels to drain the barrier.

20080523 Ancient irrigation system stands test of time - and quake

Built from 256 BC, the system involved diverting the Minjiang River's flow using man-made islands built on bamboo frames that allowed water and fish to flow freely underneath. Yet despite its close proximity to the quake, the system suffered only minor damage and was not compromised, according to the government. Hundreds of dams have been built, or are being constructed, across the country, and environmentalists have repeatedly warned of the folly of doing so in quake-prone areas such as Sichuan.

20080523 China earthquake death toll rises to 55,740

And 292,481 people were injured and 24,960 missing in the 8.0-magnitude quake that jolted southwestern Sichuan Province on May 12. Meanwhile, 11.37 million quake survivors were relocated, the office said. Power supply restored in most part of quake-hit areas, with Beichuan county, one of the worst hit places, and Hongyuan county remaining black out. Lixian county had seen electricity cut off again due to aftershocks, while power had fully restored in Jiuzhaigou, a tourist attraction, the State Electricity Regulatory Commission said in a statement.

20080519 Wen urges quake research, early warning to minimize casualties

Wen made the remark while presiding over a meeting of the earthquake relief headquarters of the State Council held at China Seismological Bureau (CSB). Wen, also head of headquarters, called on Chinese scientists and experts to intensify the monitoring on aftershocks and provide reliable early warning information. All seismological departments and observatories should make more measurements on possible aftershocks and analysis of their directions of development, Wen said. The headquarters decided to establish a special committee consisting of seismological experts across the country for earthquake research and disaster relief.

20080518 Magnitude 6 quake hits Sichuan

The epicenter of the latest temblor was located 32.1 degrees north latitude and 105 degrees east longitude, it said. Jiangyou, a city in north Sichuan, is situated near Beichuan County and Mianyang City, places hardest hit by Monday's magnitude 7.8 earthquake. The tremor was the latest strong quake monitored following more than 20 aftershocks above magnitude 5 that rocked the hardest-hit area in Sichuan. No casualty and damage in the area has been reported so far.
