20080519 Wen urges quake research, early warning to minimize casualties

Wen made the remark while presiding over a meeting of the earthquake relief headquarters of the State Council held at China Seismological Bureau (CSB). Wen, also head of headquarters, called on Chinese scientists and experts to intensify the monitoring on aftershocks and provide reliable early warning information. All seismological departments and observatories should make more measurements on possible aftershocks and analysis of their directions of development, Wen said. The epicenter of the latest temblor was located 32.1 degrees north latitude and 105 degrees east longitude, it said. Jiangyou, a city in north Sichuan, is situated near Beichuan County and Mianyang City, places hardest hit by Monday's magnitude 7.8 earthquake. The tremor was the latest strong quake monitored following more than 20 aftershocks above magnitude 5 that rocked the hardest-hit area in Sichuan.
