20100317 Central Market to be conserved as 'urban oasis'

(10-14 12:22)
In response to public concern, the government will remove the Central Market site on Jubilee Street from the application list and hand it over to the Urban Renewal Authority for conservation and revitalization, Chief Executive Donald Tsang Yam-kuen said in his policy address.

"This will improve the air quality in the district and provide an additional leisure place rarely found in this busy area,'' he said.

The revitalized Central Market will become an "urban oasis" for white-collar workers during the day and an area for locals and tourists to hang out in in the evenings and on weekends, Tsang added.

Meanwhile, the government recommends converting the Murray Building in Central into a hotel through open tender.
