[Xinhua] Amid low visibility, a Russian helicopter successfully delivered a large bulldozer and other eight sets of big machineries near the swelling Tangjiashan lake, in order to dig a diverting channel to prevent a flood, said Minister of Water Resources Chen Lei. Quake lakes were formed after landslides blocked rivers. Chen hoped the weather will allow the helicopter to deliver more big machinery to dig channels to drain the barrier.

20080523 Ancient irrigation system stands test of time - and quake

Despite its close proximity to the quake, the irrigation system suffered only minor damage and was not compromised, according to the government. [Agencies] From the hillside platform, the workings of the ingenious irrigation project that is now a UNESCO World Heritage-listed site are clearly visible. Built from 256 BC, the system involved diverting the Minjiang River's flow using man-made islands built on bamboo frames that allowed water and fish to flow freely underneath. Yet despite its close proximity to the quake, the system suffered only minor damage and was not compromised, according to the government. Hundreds of dams have been built, or are being constructed, across the country, and environmentalists have repeatedly warned of the folly of doing so in quake-prone areas such as Sichuan.

20080523 China earthquake death toll rises to 55,740

And 292,481 people were injured and 24,960 missing in the 8.0-magnitude quake that jolted southwestern Sichuan Province on May 12. Meanwhile, 11.37 million quake survivors were relocated, the office said. Power supply restored in most part of quake-hit areas, with Beichuan county, one of the worst hit places, and Hongyuan county remaining black out. Lixian county had seen electricity cut off again due to aftershocks, while power had fully restored in Jiuzhaigou, a tourist attraction, the State Electricity Regulatory Commission said in a statement.

Sources said that the town's towers of rubble now will be built as a memorial park in place for generations of future visitors to witness. Tucked in a steep river valley atop the unstable Longmen Fault, the onetime Beichuan town of 20,000 is in too vulnerable a location to rebuild, officials said. He added that survivors of the quake in Beichuan have been relocated to the nearby cities of Mianyang and Anxian Soldiers are guarding entry to the ruined city, barring access due to fears of infection and concern that a river blocked by landslides above the town, forming two lakes, may suddenly burst, letting a deluge down the valley.
