Wing Lee Street in Central has been saved from the wrecker's ball
"[Residents] said they would miss it if some of the buildings were pulled
down. The authority's proposal shows it has listened to public views," she said.
Under an authority plan set out in November 2008, three of the street's 12
tenements, or tong-laus, were to be kept while the rest would be demolished.
Other low-rise buildings were to be erected.
But an alternative plan disclosed yesterday suggests preserving all the
tenements in the street while the redevelopment of nearby Wa In Fong East and Wa
In Fong West streets, as well as blocks at the corner of Staunton Street and
Chung Wo Lane, will go ahead.
"This case is not exceptional. We are just seeking a perfect proposal."
Cheung admitted the latest plan was made in light of public demand to keep all
the Wing Lee Street blocks.
